We have a place for you.

If you’ve ever considered volunteering your time and talents for community service, we have a place for you at the WNJ Auxiliary.

Volunteering is good for your health. It’s a proven fact, volunteering is good for you, emotionally and physically. According to the Corporation for National & Community Service, volunteering has a positive effect on physical and mental health, volunteering lowers the rate of depression among those 65 and older and volunteering increases the level of self–worth.

Since 1965, the WNJ Auxiliary has been a committed, caring, dedicated group of women and men who give generously of their time to provide many hours of service each week to the patients, visitors and staff of the medical center.

The WNJ Auxiliary has donated thousands of hours and dollars to enhance the services of our hospital. The Auxiliary operates the hospital gift shop, staffs the information desks, assist with families in intensive care and surgery waiting rooms along with helping out in the Women & Children’s Services.

The Auxiliary sponsors scholarships each year to local high school seniors who are pursuing an education in healthcare; and contributes to many community outreach projects.

Our Volunteer Program:

Volunteers are asked to commit to one four-hour shift each week, although we will work with your schedule. Most opportunities are during the day on weekdays with limited evening and weekend placements available. Adult volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

There are many benefits to becoming a volunteer. In addition to helping others, volunteers have the opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills, gain new insights and achieve a sense of accomplishment. Volunteers receive free parking, free coffee or tea during their shift, a free meal for every four-hour shift completed, free flu shots, free screening mammograms after completing one year of service, a special discount in the gift shop, invitations to special hospital and health screening events and free membership to the hospital workout center.

Volunteers are needed throughout the hospital. Opportunities include Hospital Gift Shop, Ambassadors, Information Desks, Popcorn Machine, Time Out, Pre-Admit Testing, Family Waiting Areas (SICU, MICU, Surgical Care, Center for Women and Children, and Emergency Room). Volunteers are also needed for special projects/events that arise throughout the Year.

Orientation and Training:

All volunteers must attend general hospital orientation prior to beginning volunteer placement and an annual in-service. Volunteers are required to have a TB screening prior to beginning volunteer placement. This is a simple test done free of charge at orientation by the Employee Health Nurse.

The volunteer services department is part of the hospital organization and it operates as any other department. Therefore, volunteers are subject to hospital rules and regulations. Volunteers are expected to be on time for their assignments and are required to notify their service area chairman if they must be absent.
