For Patients with Chronic and Non-Healing Wounds:

For most people, wounds heal relatively quickly and easily.  For others, wound healing is a complex medical problem requiring specialized care.  The Wound Care Services at Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center provides care and education for patients with chronic and non-healing wounds.

Chronic wounds are often associated with diabetic patients and the following conditions: poor blood flow to a wound site, venous insufficiency, and pressure ulcers. Physicians on the medical staff at the hospital have experience working with wounds that have resisted healing after months and even years of traditional care.

Through our performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives, we have consistently decreased wound size and our patients have reported significantly less pain. Physicians on the medical staff and other healthcare professionals at the clinic are committed to healing and improving the quality of life for patients.

Conditions

Staff at the HBO and Wound Care Center work in partnership with patients to develop a treatment plan to help speed the healing process.  Acute and chronic non-healing wounds treated include:

  • Pressure ulcers
  • Neuropathic ulcers
  • Ischemic ulcers
  • Venous insufficiency

Treatment Options Providing Relief and Hope

Physicians on the medical staff at the clinic assess the severity of the wound and evaluate the patient to develop an individualized treatment plan.  Treatment options available through the clinic include:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen treatment chamber
  • Wound dressings
  • Removal of damaged/dead tissue
  • Compression therapy
  • Advanced wound care therapies (bioengineered tissue, medications, and dressing materials)
  • Edema management
  • Non-invasive vascular assessment

Patients and their caregivers are given detailed instructions on how to care for the wound at home and how to protect the wound from further injury.  Once the wound is healed, nurses and physicians on the medical staff work with the patient to develop a plan to help prevent a recurrence of the wound.
